(as a comparison) Throw a box of tissue out of your car window at 60mph, with the side of your car having a thin layer of styrofoam on that side. the box WILL damage the styrofoam. The Shuttle and the tank were travelling at the same speed. The icy foam only had a few feet in which to be slowed.
