Description: Lunar Recession is what we call the observed fact that Earth's satellite, the moon, is moving away from the Earth. At the moment the moon is moving away from Earth at 3.82 centimeters a year, plus or minus 0.07 cm/year. Some Creationists have claimed that Earth must be fairly young because the moon would have bumped into Earth 100,785 years ago. By the reasoning of Creationists, this means Earth cannot be older than 100,785 years; of course, Earth's age has been accurately measured to be about 4.47 billion years old. Therefore lunar recession must not be constant except in the minds of Creationists. |

Desertphile ::: Favorites "Wait a minute.. the tides are pushing the moon away from the Earth as well as slowing down its (the Earth's) rotation? I'll be darned.. somehow I missed that one." Indeed, one can see evidence that Earth's day was once considerably shorter. To maintain the same orbital period, the moon is "required" by Kepler's law, the laws of motion, gravity, and the conservation of angular momentum to recede. Tidal friction is chaotic, but the physics are not. 07-07-17 12:11:13 _____________________________________________________
Desertphile ::: Favorites "As well as the fact that we do not know what started the recession." Howdy. Tidal friction and the conservation of angular momentum is what causes the moon to recede from the Terra-Luna barycenter. Earth's rotation slows; energy is imparted to the moon; to maintain the same orbital period, the moon must recede. Some of the energy is lost in heat. 07-07-17 12:09:05 _____________________________________________________
NomadSoul76 ::: Favorites Wait a minute.. the tides are pushing the moon away from the Earth as well as slowing down its (the Earth's) rotation? I'll be darned.. somehow I missed that one. Darnit I should have known that! I read about astronomy! I'm miffed that such a basic concept evaded me for so long. Oh well.. it'd be boring if I knew everything. 07-07-17 05:28:03 _____________________________________________________
beliserius ::: Favorites As well as the fact that we do not know what started the recession. Example, we don't know when something hit it... or when it successfully started to leave the orbit. As well as the fact that the further the moon is away from earth, the faster it will move away making a non-constant speed and also a more of a exponential rate. 07-07-17 03:30:51 _____________________________________________________
Desertphile ::: Favorites "The frothingly insane kook who claimed plate tectonics and fusion are Satanic lies?" Yes, and fossils were placed in the "stratosphere" by Satan: and he actually believed it! 07-07-15 13:20:43 _____________________________________________________
Desertphile ::: Favorites "Yeah, we're all laughing at the Creationist clowns who are incapable of learning anything of...." Well, more sadness than laughter, actually. It is sad that so many people are mentally wounded by occultism and superstition. 07-07-15 13:20:04 _____________________________________________________
NotSoOldHippy ::: Favorites Yeah, we're all laughing at the Creationist clowns who are incapable of learning anything of science. Desertphile once again kicks Creationist ass -- and the Creationist ass (that would be you, RR) stands there and wimpers "is not!" Love it! 07-07-15 12:08:16 _____________________________________________________
NotSoOldHippy ::: Favorites It's a Twilight Zone episode. }:-} CDan't happen too soon for my tastes. Maybe mass extinctions of the human animal will give this planet another chance to produce something sane. 07-07-15 12:07:25 _____________________________________________________
NotSoOldHippy ::: Favorites Creationist morons will simply demand that plate tectonics doesn't exist, ergo your "claims" are debunked. Remember Ron Stringfollower? The frothingly insane kook who claimed plate tectonics and fusion are Satanic lies? Denial of the truth is quite easilly done. 07-07-15 12:06:16 _____________________________________________________
Desertphile ::: Favorites "this is again laughable!" It is "laughable?" How? I proved, mathematically, that your assertion was false..... and that made you laugh? I would have thought you would be annoyed at being proven a fool. 07-07-14 21:03:10 _____________________________________________________ |
